The Appeal
The whole project was underpinned by an appeal run by the Friends of St Michael’s Church. This was launched in June 2019 at the Parish Hall Village Fete. The main platform for the Appeal was sponsorship of elements of the medieval N aisle wooden ceiling. A number of fundraising events were organised during the Appeal, which was completed successfully during November 2019.

Our Grant Funders
We are very grateful to our sponsors, local people and businesses who have supported our project.
The National Lottery Heritage Fund supplied a grant that covered half the cost of the work - £30k, and further funding came from:
- Nuttall Trust - a local charity - £8k
- Garfield Weston Foundation - a family run charitable trust - £5k
- Wolfson Foundation - awarded in association with ChurchCare - £3k
- Somerset Churches Trust - supports work on buildings in the historic county of Somerset - £1.5k
Friends of St Michael's Church raised £15k through their appeal to Save Our Special Ceiling.
George Chedburn of Chedburn Codd provided architectural services to the project
West Country Tiling Co of Frome carried out the work.
The building work
Following initial work to establish the soundness of the roof timbers at the end of June 202, building work took place between July and September 2020. Soon after building work started in July a formal revision of the tender took place. The gutter had to be raised to comply with Lead Sheet Association guidance. This reduced the angle of slope in the roof and the structure of the roof was altered to include a step in the lead roof covering.
An overall account of the project with illustrations of the roof work is contained in a separate document. To view this click here.
